Japanese Pilots at the Western Front 1916-18

How many Pilots from Japan serve with the RFC/RAF & Armée de l' Air between 1916-18? If so, did one make an ace? And , what about losses?

Thanks for support!!

Bests,
h.

Hans,

No immediate find. It appears that the Japanese involvement concentrated on naval activities in the Mediterranean.

See http://www.naval-history.net/WW1NavyJapanese.htm

Re: Japanese Pilots at the Western Front 1916-18

Leendert,

I remember an photo (long time ago) from an French SPA at the Western Front (1917?) with at minium 3 pilots look like of japanese orgin. I have had then written an letter to the French Airforce Archiv, but no answer.

Could they also are from Cochinchina & Anam? (now Rep. of Vietnam)

Cordialement,

Hans

Re: Japanese Pilots at the Western Front 1916-18

Gentlemen,
There was a Japanese pilot by the name of Onokitchi Isobe that flew with SPA57 on the western front. I believe he was credited with one victory and was seriously injured in a crash during take off after which he returned to Japan. That's all I know of him.

Perhaps the following on this WW 1 website may be worth reading: http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/pe...ese-pilot.html
