Re: B-17 Losses 11. January 1944

Streak,

I for one am happy to help, but you're going to need to be specific about what you are seeking exactly. Stan D Bishop and John A Hey's Losses of the US 8th and 9th Air Forces Vol 2 lists a total of 47 B-17s for the day (assuming I did not mis-count the total and be aware, I did not discount aircraft that were assigned to bomb Halberstadt because it is 10.30pm and I knocked off work an hour ago, then must be up again at 5am...)

Plus 6 that were 'salvaged' and gives considerable detail on each loss. I can't possibly spell each one of them out for you here on the board....

So, I say again, can you be more specific rather than just asking for a list?
Otherwise, I just have to refer you to the source. Be aware that they can be very hard to get hold of, so to help you, the volume's ISBN number is

978-0-9547685-2-2

Nick

Re: B-17 Losses 11. January 1944

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your Interest and help in this case. Especially I`m looking for two losses ( B-17 42-3448 303rd BG. Lt. Eich ) and the second B-17 42-31107.
Both crashed that day in the vicinity of Lake Steinhude.
Due to German Investigation Error at this time, we think that 42-3448 did not crashed near the Lake but 20 Kilometres more West near Großenheerse.

with Warm Regards

Streak98 (Dirk)

42-3448 - Down to Flak and fighters, lost 2 engines and crashed on the north shore of Steinhuder Meer
42-31107 - Shot down by rockets from fighters, crashed into swamp.

From 8th & 9th losses, quoting MACRs 1924 and 2513 respectively
