Me-109E ID?

Thought I'd share an interesting photo from my modest collection. Is this airframe in Romanian service, or is "Romana" his girl? Also of interest is the owl design on the cowl. Is this a unique photo, or a print from an official "stock" photo. I would like to find out more about the aircraft and pilot depicted.

Your comments and inputs are welcome. Thank you in advance.

TC

Re: Me-109E ID?

The emblem underneath the cockpit repreents an 'R' for Richthofen, and is the unit emblem of Jagdgeschwader 2 "Richthofen".
Here is a page about this fighter unit:
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...ader/JG2-R.htm

The name 'Romana' has nothing to do with Rumania. Most probably it was indeed the name of the pilot's girlfriend.

Finally, the photo appears to me to be a reproduction.

Re: Me-109E ID?

Hi,

The owl design originated with 10.(N)/JG 26 that was later renamed 11.(N)/JG 2 of IV.(N)/JG 2. The emblem was retained.

Sidney
