Zoufahl?

Regrettably I have no informaton for you but the name "Zoufahl" sounds strange. It sounds almost exactly like the ordinary German word "Zufall", which has the same meaning as the French "hasard" (NOT the English "hazard"). In English Zufall has various translations according to what it's about: luck (I met her by pure luck), coincidence, (by) chance: Ich fand es nur durch Zufall = I found it only by chance. English "chance" is NOT the same as French "chance" (by chance = par hasard).

Well, perhaps our German readers can tell us more on Zoufahl as a family name. To me it sounds peculiar although I spent 18 years in Germany and even married an innocent victim there.

Re: Information about pilots

Hello Michel,

the old JG 51 chronicle of Gerhard Aders and Werner Held, first edition 1985, contains the table „Luftsiege der Flugzeugführer des JG 51“ (appendix 5). There the following claims are listed:

Fw Karl-Heinz Funk (II./JG 51) more than 12

Lt Fritz Dünkel (I./JG 51) more than 1

Ofw Rudi Elsner (II./JG 51) more than 5

Oblt Franz-Josef Zoufahl (III./JG 51) 26, KIA 24 July 1944

Lt Günther Roth (I. and III./JG 51) 1

Lt ? Scheurer (I. and III./JG 51) 1

Oblt Hans-Gottfried Schulz (I./JG 51) 31 (3 with JG 51).

Regards
Leo

Re: Information about pilots

I have the book, but this one is obsolete.
A lot of mistakes,pilots that are not referenced as Horst Kirchner,Martin Justel,Adolf Klarner,Ewald Knop,Gunther Allmenroder.....etc.etc.

Sorry

Well, I am sorry for my mistake - hardly believing that the family name of Zufahl existed. It seems that it DID exist allright. In matters of names almost everything is possible...

Re: Information about pilots

Hi guys

To corroborate the fact that the book of Aders/Held is of no use,I have these 2 examples.

Dietolf Willers 10° "abschus" (05/09/42) source J.Prien (JFV series teil 9/II) but unknown by Aders/Held.

Leander Mayer 12° "abschus" (26/09/42) source JFV teil 9/II,but unknown by Aders/Held.

Other thing
Hans-Gottfried Schulz seems to be a ghost
31 "abschusse" by Aders/Held but unknown in Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries ( 3 "abscusse" by J.Prien)

Best Regards
Michel

Re: Information about pilots

focusfocus,
There was a Ofw. Franz-Josef Zoufahl in 7./JG 51 who was KIA on 44-07-24 10 km SW Kauen.
