Macchi C.202 Main ID Plate

Surviving identification/data plates from RA airplanes are relatively rare, particularly main airframe ID plates. This example came home with a U.S soldier from North Africa. Can any TOCH members decipher the entries on this plate and provide further history?

Re: Macchi C.202 Main ID Plate

Hi Steve,

If it's like an Italian AFV plate I once had the first no. is the date (possibly 1940) and the second the work number. Other than basic aircraft type recognition I don't know much else about Italian machines!

Kind regards,

David

The first number is the military serial (Matricola Militare) 9540, the second one is the construction number.

Re: Macchi C.202 Main ID Plate

The serial MM.9540 belongs to a C. 202 "Serie X" produced by Breda between July and September 1942.

This very aircraft was found by Allied troops abandoned in an aircraft dump at El Aouina airfield near Tunis. On a sidenote, its DB 601 A/1 engine was Werk No.32164-8607.
