Re: 32051 Sqn Ldr A.C. Martin
Hi Paul
He was mentioned by his contemporaries as having a limp due to an aircraft crash prewar. On checking his record I found that he was with 35 Squadron in mid to late 1930s before, obviously thanks to you, joining 3 AACU. Nothing definite - hence my enquiry! Cheers Brian |

Re: 32051 Sqn Ldr A.C. Martin
Hello,
From "Truculent Tribes, Turbulent Skies" 35 Sqdn lost 5 a/c plus 2 ex 40 Sqdn a/c. This was in the Somaliland, Africa period. One a/c of note Gordon K2761 16/1/36 u/c collapsed, Tagalara, I think Uganda. While K2686 taxied into Virginia K2336 on 2/5/1933. K2685 hit a drogue on 7/6/1933. Have looked at K file Gordon's but there are many with 35 squadron starting with K2612 and ending with K2769. All between 1932 and 1936. Alex |

Re: 32051 Sqn Ldr A.C. Martin
I think I have Found it
25 Apr 1932 2 FTS Armstrong Whitworth Atlas Trainer (K1466) 1 mile W of RAF Digby Aircraft stalled and crashed, damaged beyond repair. Saturday 30 April 1932 , Grantham Journal , Lincolnshire, England Type: Illustrated Words: 513 Page: 3 Tags: none Pilot’s Narrow Escape.— Pilot Officer "J." Martin, of the Royal Air Force Camp Digby, narrowly escaped death on Monday when the aeroplane he was piloting crashed into a stone wall near the camp. It is thought that Martin stalled to avoid another machine, and that the aeroplane went into a spin. The machine was damaged, and Martin was extricated with fractured thigh and other thigh and other injuries. Improvised splints were made from parts of the machine' I can't see a J Martin at Digby at the time the injuries match for 'limp' and also.... The under mentioned are all posted to No.2 Flying Training School, Digby, with effect from 11.7.31 - one of whom, was: A. C. Martin. https://www.flightglobal.com/FlightP...20-%200851.PDF 32051 S/L Alan Cresswell MARTIN RAF, was KIA on 25/26-8-1941 when No.40 Sqn Wellington IC X9749, failed to return from ops to Karlsruhe - BCL2/125. |

Re: 32051 Sqn Ldr A.C. Martin
Hi Paul
Excellent, once again! That just has to be our man. Despite his injuries it would seem that he recovered sufficiently to join 35 Squadron! Should I ever require the services of a private detective, I'll bear you in mind! Alex - thanks for all of your digging - apologies for leading you up the garden path! Cheers Brian |

Re: 32051 Sqn Ldr A.C. Martin
Brian
I was initially worried There was - J W Martin in RAF in timeframe but he was at 4FTS Egypt instructing at the time he was then goingbto be posted to India he prob had enough of foreign postings and transferred to reserve soon after ! I will check posting of fellow Digby trainees if he damages leg in time frame that will all have qualified earlier and he prob held back till next course so need to check their postings to confirm my supposition Paul |

Re: 32051 Sqn Ldr A.C. Martin
Hello,
Sadly the "K File" has only the following. K1466 - Deld to IA 20.9.30 for 2 FTS coded 2. Stalled and crashed 1m W of Digby, 25.4.32; SOC 18.7.32. No crew names, I wonder if he was alone or had there been two onboard ? Alex |

Re: 32051 Sqn Ldr A.C. Martin
Just a quick note to say I checked the promotions and initial Sqn postings of his contemporaries at 2 FTS Digby who started at the same time as Martin. They all were confirmed in rank as P/O before him (by up to 12 months) and were posted to their first Sqn's before him. So it implies he was "held back" from some reason until he subsequently recovered from his injuries and completed Pilot training probably as a result of the accident
