Night attacks by Luftwaffe in September 1944, Eastern France.

Hi,

The ceremonies of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation in France lead to the publications of flyers, propectus or other special edition magazines.

I just finished reading one of them that tells that during the night of 2 to 3 September 1944, the city of Toul (25kms west of Nancy) was bombed by the Luftwaffe causing damages and casualties.

Does anybody know which units have been involved this night?

Thank you in advance

Bertrand

Luftflotte 3's diary just recorded an attack by 41 aircraft of Fliegerkorps IX on the night of 3/4 September. There is no breakdown of the units involved, unfortunately.

(The target on 2/3 September was Verdun).

Re: Night attacks by Luftwaffe in September 1944, Eastern France.

The LG1 history by Peter Taghorn says on the 1/2-9-44 73 aircraft of IX Fl.Kp. attacked Verdun, stating that the crews of II/LG1 took off at 21.15 and 0022hrs from Rheine. For the 2/3-9-44 it says the attack on Verdun was repeated by 24 aircraft. For the night of 3/4-9-44 both I/LG1 from Hesepe and II/LG1 from Rheine took part in an attack on Toul.

Re: Night attacks by Luftwaffe in September 1944, Eastern France.

Bertrand,

For your information, for the night of 1/2 September 1944 I have the following information for I./KG66's activities over France: Crew(s) of 1./KG66 marked the centre of Sedan with flares and ground markers, crews of 2./KG66 flew to the Seine Estuary and attacked Amiens on their return flight, crew(s) of 3./KG66 marked and bombed Verdun. Take off and landing for all flights at Eindhoven in The Netherlands between approx. 21:00 and 24:00 hrs.

Hope this helps et bien cordialement,

Marcel

Bonsoir Bertrand,

Nothing on 3/4 September for you, I already checked. Possibly because the entire Gruppe moved on the 4th from Eindhoven to Frankfurt/Rhein-Main and shortly afterwards from there to Dedelstorf, where they would more or less stay till March 1945.

Regards,

Marcel
