The first allied pilots "escape" from Portugal

In 1941 a Portuguese officer risked his career to build the first allied airmen “escape” line from Portugal. Hundreds of men would use it to leave internment in the next years. A story with espionage, diplomatic games and much more…

Sorry for the english and I hope you like it.

Nice article Carlos!

Question about the term "local GESTAPO"

Do you literally mean local German agents, or figuratively Portuguese secret police agents?

Roy Booth says that in Figueira da Foz was a Dutch guy that was - so the emabssy said - a Gestapo Agent. Latter I presume he assumes that the persuit was made by German Gestapo agent's.

Portugal was a espionage paradise and men from all the German - and also british, american etc... - services were here.

The country was even named Spy Land after the war by some agents...

Just a curious note: the book "Casino Royal" from Ian Fleming (007 author) is based in his experiences in Casino Estoril, when he was in Portugal for a couple of days....

This is Roy Booth's story. I must admit that they were probably under surveillance by the germans. Other pilot's wish I was able to locate even had some "muscular dicussions"- as one put it - with them.

The pursuit with shootings and so... well I look at that with some reserves.
