Re: German script translation needed please

Hello Mike,
you are lucky, because it is not written in "Sütterlin" (old-german).I will try to translate, although its partly difficult to identify:
above/horizontal:
first word might be a place or town, then "November 1943 fatal crash as a shooter on board. 11 more comrades crashed too, 10 dead. The only survivor but seriously injured is captain ...(sorry, cant decode the name)
middle/vertical:
for everlasting memory from your Robi ("Robi" is a kind of term of endearment of the name "Robert" - they were very close friends)
down/horizontal:
Robert Gröhntke, (name of the town/area I cant decode), in Pommern (Pommern is a former prussian province, today in Germanys northeast and Polands northwest)

Hope I could help

Greetings from Germany

Chris

Fatal crash in November 1943, crashed as air-gunner with 11 more comrades, 10 of whom died. Seriously injured, the surviving Kptn. [Name of place?] on the Crimea. [something in brackets, too small to read]

Robert Gröhnke [?], Althammer (Pommerania)

[Written at 90º to the rest] In eternal memory of your Robi, in July 1944.

Re: German script translation needed please

Name of the Kapitän might be Schweikert. Gröhnke is correct.
Btw, it IS Sütterlin script (capitals!!), though heavily influenced by Normschrift. Might have been written in the post-war time for that reason.
The 90-degree script is pure Sütterlin and written by a different person (Robert (Robi) Gröhnke on the photo, I presume). The recipient of the photo may have written from memory...

Re: German script translation needed please

Dear Gang,

for my eyes it reads not "Krim" but "Kirn" (a small town at the river Nahe in the area Bad Kreuznach).

Best Regards
Norbert

Re: German script translation needed please

Kirn(N) is most probable which would significate Kirn/Nahe.
There are still Schweikert in Kirn.

Re: German script translation needed please

Interesting case. I haven't either of the names in my loss database - not in November 1943 or in any other month during the War. Could any one help? Any hint on the Geschwader/Gruppe/Staffel?

Matti

Re: German script translation needed please

Looked on this site but could not find a crash in Nov.43 in Kirn area http://www.flugzeugabstuerze-saarland.de/html/body_hochwald-nahe.html

If the photo is a tribute to Bs Robert Grohntke killed Nov. 43 would a grave search give some clue, I do not have much luck with these searches.

Re: German script translation needed please

Dears,

I am from Stettin (Szczecin) near Altdamm (Dąbie) in Poland
So I think correct text will be:

Robert Gröhnke, altdammer (Pommern)

Altdamm name of city = here there is airfield near Stettin.
altdammer means member of city Altdamm or soldier from Luftwaffe unit in Altdamm - here was Luftwaffe School (A/ B 118 Stettin-Altdamm).

Airfield in Altdamm-Stettin (Areoklub Szczeciński):
