Swastika Panels
Does anyone know anything about swastika panels that were cut from the tail section of downded German planes in WWII? Are they common?
Here are some pics Last edited by erwin77; 9th February 2010 at 20:46. |

Re: Swastika Panels
I would not say they are common however they do exist and come up for sale periodically. It should also be noted that faked ac panel/ markings also exist.
If you do a search on this forum you will likely find a few examples which have been posted for discussion in the past. And if you have a specimen for review please post mages. There are a number of individuals on the forum who are quite knowledgeable about this area of collecting. Jeremy |

Re: Swastika Panels
I have added photos to the original thread. If anyone could identify the plane, and possibly the lettering visable in my grandfather's picture, the letters CE appear on the plane beside the machine gun, any thoughts?

Re: Swastika Panels
Its a Messerschmitt Bf 110 G Version, sadly no serial visible, helpful if you know where and what time the pic was taken - I believe end 44 - beginning 45 ?

Re: Swastika Panels
Do the letters CE, beside the machine gun mean anything?
I'm not 100% but I think my grandfather said he got it in either Belgium, or Normandy in 1944. |

Re: Swastika Panels
"There are a few known losses of the Me110 that have the first letters of the registration code as "CE"...that seems to appear on the side of the fuselage".
"These are the ones I know of". CE+CB Messerschmitt Bf110 Küstenstaffel Krim M0005/6/95 CE+CX Messerschmitt Bf110 CE+UD Messerschmitt Bf110 CE+UF Messerschmitt Bf108 CE+UI Messerschmitt Bf110 F-2 /Trop W.Nr.4536 W.Nr.4536 B0034 CE+UR Messerschmitt Bf110 F-2 W.Nr.4545 W.Nr.4545 DS D0031/AIR/40/1887 CE+UV Messerschmitt Bf110 F-2 W.Nr.4549 W.Nr.4549 D0031/AIR/40/1887 Fuller, M. 2010 per comm Can Anyone confirm that this is correct? if so, can this list be narrowed down by looking at the picture of the plane? I would love to know exactly what aircraft this came from, is that possible? |

Re: Swastika Panels
ah your wrong - the CE is the second part of the code it shows the squadron and number of the plane in the squadron.
For example 2Z + CV 2Z ist the group = Nachtjagdgeschwader 6 C = individual aircraft letter V = number of the Staffel/Gruppe in this case a Bf 110 G-4 of 11./NJG 6 so he was in Belgium - I think its a Bf 110 G-4 from a german nightfighter group - a lot of them downed during December 1944/ Januar 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge, maybe also a plane downed earlyer. its just n´suggestion, it look likes the plane crashed or bellied in this wooded area - but without serial or date its not possible to got a clear identification - I had all (most of them) nightfighter losses and my database had more then 100 000 german losses the second letter CE will find thousand times. regards khorat |

Re: Swastika Panels
Why the 2 'saw blade' disks around the 2 bullet holes?

Re: Swastika Panels
Thank you for all of your wonderful information.
To answer your question, I believe these are patches or something similar, if you look closely at the pic of him cutting it out, you will notice the 2 round bubbles on the panel. these have since ( before I inherited it ) came off, exposing the 2 holes on the panel today. Now, look at the pic of the panel, look closely and you will notice several circles running in lines under the paint, smaller than the 2 holes, maybe over the riviots, or something. I believe the 5 smaller circles with hole in the center, are missing there "patches" . what ever they are, the were there when the plane crashed. What do you think they are? |

Re: Swastika Panels
Hi,
Thinking along the same lines as Khorat, could it possibly be "C9" rather than "CE"? The code is in front of the cross here. C9 would belong to NJG 5. Don |
