Jg301, 2/3/45

I am seeking information about units of JG301 used against US B-17s over Czech airspace on 2 March 1945. I have some info that they may have been armor-plated and equipped with 30mm cannons. Can anyone verify this? Also how many fighters were lost during that battle? Thank you.

Re: Jg301, 2/3/45

Hello,
According to Willi Reschke´s book "Jagdgeschwader 301/302" there are 25 losses of I.-IV./JG 301 for that day, but only two in this area:
-Fhr. Heinrich Lieb, 2./JG 301, Fw 190 A-9, KIA Ruzyne
-Uffz. Günther Schulz, 5./JG 301, Fw 190 D-9 No.500569 "weiße 14", KIA w.Prague

Erich is right, some of the Fw 190 A-8/9 were equipped with the the "Rüstsatz 2" (=R2, MK 108 in outer wing position), but armour plates are very rarely in the last days of WW 2.
Regards, Heuser

Re: Jg301, 2/3/45

Hi, guys.

I have 35 detailed losses registered for the unit on this day (I. - IV./J.G.301).

So it seems I have about ten more than Reschke.

Here are the lists:

http://www.ahs.no/discussion_images/ahs-losses0001.gif

http://www.ahs.no/discussion_images/ahs-losses0002.gif

Also, the MK 108 is a 30 centimeter autoloading cannon, heavy armament for a fighter aircraft. The same cannon was used in the Me 262 among others. Bomber killers....

Regards,
Andreas

Guys

I did not want to announce it by myself, but if you check this link
http://mmpbooks.biz/books/8389450224/8389450224p.htm
you will find my book dealing with march 1945 actions and with complete (as far as I know) list of LW losses (and other sides as well).

Also Don Christensens fathers (?) fate is mentioned...

have a nice reading...

Andreas,
I will meet the Veterans of JG 301/302 in May 2006 during the annual reunion. Be so kind and send me your list. I will discuss it with Willi Reschke.

Re: Jg301, 2/3/45

This story pretty well described Jiří Rajlich as well in several articles and book about Air War over Bohemia and Moravia.

15 Fw 190 of II./JG 301 took off Stendal AF at 10.15 and attacked 398th BG between 10.40 and 11 hours in area Kladno - Slaný, West of Prague

Fw 190s shot down B-17G (s/n 44-6573, 603rd BS, 398th BG). Plane crashed nearby village Kvíc, not far from Slaný. 7 KIA, 1 MIA, 1 POW.

In clash with Mustangs of 352nd FG were destroyed (according Czech sources):

Fw 190D9, WNr. 500111, red 4, 8./JG 301, Fhr. Helmut-Peter Rix, NW of Ústí nad Labem (Aussig)
Fw 190D9, 8./JG 301, Lt. Walter Kropp, StaKa, unknown location
Fw 190A9, 8./JG 301, Uffz. Heger, unknown location
Fw 190A9, 8./JG 301, Uffz. Ehrlich, unknown location
Fw 190D9, white 14, Uffz. Günther Schulz, II./JG 301, KIA, between villages Třebíz and Klobuky, nearby Kladno
Fw 190A9, blue 3, Uffz. Josef Krapp, II./JG 301, between villages Vrbičany and Páleč, not far from Kladno
Fw 190A9, II./JG 301, Fhr. Heinrich Lief, area Kladno
Fw 190A9, II./JG 301, Uffz. Jürgen Dietrich, area Kladno

Re: Jg301, 2/3/45

Hello all of you

First I will say that Peter's book , give a good overview of the battlesthat took place over German Occupied territories on 2 March 1945. . Congratulations Peter . I read it in two days , and I have still learned something . It is avery nice book , small format , from page # 49 to 64 you will find lists of sources , missing crews , losses and victories . Pages 65 to 80 are dedicated to colour profiles of opponents .

I have interviewed some years ago , one of the survivors of these events , ie Helmut "Peter" Rix of 8./JG301.

Fot those speaking French , it sould be placed in parallel of second volume of history of JG300 by J.Y.Lorant , which also depicts the events of that day concerning JG300.

The english version of this book is not availabable yest as far as I know .

All groups of JG301 were engaged that day . The stab/JG301 Ta 152h also took off but have to turn back to their home base.

Plase found probably one of the last fragments of this day , a very small piece of Fw 190D-9 W.Nr 500569 , White 14'" of Uffz. Günther Schulz, 5./JG 301.

All the Best

Eric

Re: Jg301, 2/3/45

Peter :

Were you able to interview 352nd fg veterans first hand for your work ? From talking with them and having their written history it appeared JG 301 was slaughtered, with II./JG 301 Doras and A-9's taken out unawares while still in flight formation in most cases.

Wolfgang Ehrlich flew blue 9 of 8th staffel, Jürgen Dietrich of 8th staffel flew blue 10, both KIA in their A-9's. Reschke has a typ0 mistake and mentions Dietrich flying a Dora.
