Sgn. Ldr. James Ernest White 44 Sqdn.

I am looking for any information about the Sgn pilot. Ldr. James Ernest White DFC 66581 who was the only rescued crew member from NE138 (27 Aug 44 gardening PRIVET). Does anyone know the circumstances where he was caught? Who shot them down and where?
I will be very grateful for any information.
Peter

Re: Sgn. Ldr. James Ernest White 44 Sqdn.

Hello,

By his own word, he was captured near Frisches Haff 26/27 August 1944.

From there, according to his liberation questionnaire:

Marine Lazarette Pillau 27 August 1944- 8 September 1944
German Army Hospital Hannover 15 - 20 September 1944
Hohemark Dulag Oberusel 21 September 1944 - 10 October 1944
Obermassfeld
Meiningen 15 April 1945

He stated all dates were "very approximate". Obermassfeld was the home of Reserve-Lazaret IX-C. He makes a point of thanking three British majors and 10 captains, all doctors, for the excellent work on him at Obermassfeld/Meiningen

Included in his liberation questionnaire is the point that he brought back, under escort, an RASC man, Pvt. Fryer, who was suspected of collaboration.

Regards,

Dave

Hi,

Thank you for your quick answer and expanding your knowledge about the lost Lancasters over Poland. Does James White himself mention the circumstances of their shooting down. As far as I know, the Luftwaffe did not make any claims regarding this plane? that day 44 Sqdn lost 2 machines over Denmark.
Regards,

Peter
