Wellington Z8647

I have been asked if I can help establish the "cause of loss" of Wellington ‘W’ Z8647 from 104 Squadron; it took off from Kabrit on the 1st July 1942 and was lost somewhere west of El Alamein where the Africa Corp. had come to a halt.

Does anyone have any information on fighter / flak claims?

Any help would be much appreciated

Regards

PeteT

Re: Wellington Z8647

That day, the Luftwaffe did not claim the downing of Wellington in Africa. Only flak or technical failure or loss of orientation.

Re: Wellington Z8647

Hello PeteT

Lost on the night of 2 July 42, according to the 104 Sqn ORB Form 500 section ( the Form 501 does not include aircraft lost on operations therefore Ellis and the aircraft are not listed there, nor does it bother mentioning the names of the crews at all). Hence our entry in page 663 of Med Air War Vol 2, albeit the entry runs on from the end of the previous entry.- 104 Sqn Wellington II Z8647 ‘W’ took off from Abu Sueir to attack MT. Lost one engine to Flak and crash-landed in desert; Flt Lt D.Ellis and five walked for three days but captured just short of Allied lines and PoWs

Thanks for all the responses to date; I am passing the information on to the original enquirer, who is researching the service career of WO Humphrey
