Sicilian Night Fighter zone ‘CASTOR’
Post #183 in 'Using ULTRA to research the Luftwaffe' contains a reference I found to this NF zone: does anyone know anything about it? Dates etc?
Thanks, Bruce

Re: Sicilian Night Fighter zone ‘CASTOR’
Thanks, Junker. Having the correct name is always a good start.
Any idea when Kastor (and the others?) became operational? Bruce

Re: Sicilian Night Fighter zone ‘CASTOR’
This might help a little. 9. Kp. came under:
II./Ln.-Rgt. 200 Formed spring 1943 in Italy as a radar (Flugmeldemess) Abteilung by renaming Stab I./Ln.-Rgt. 222 in Denmark. (Tessin; Kannapin) 20 Apr 43: Stab II at Comiso/Sicily. (NARA WashDC - T-321, T-405 and T-971 documents) FpN: L 54480 (12.3.1943-7.9.1943) 9. Kompanie Luftnachrichten-Regiment 200. Aug 43: Kp. was operating a Freya radar site at Capo Spartivento on the toe of the Italian peninsula. (Karl-Otto Hoffmann) So it appears that these sites on Sicily were just being set up in April and May 1943. Note: Karl-Otto Hoffmann places Kastor much farther north on the east coast of Sicily, according to his map reproduced on SES's website: http://www.gyges.dk/Flum%20Med%209.pdf L. |

Hoffmann's book do contain a few errors.

Re: Sicilian Night Fighter zone ‘CASTOR’
Thanks Larry, Junker, that helps.
I went back to the source of my post #183 in 'Using Ultra ...' and I am confident the Freya in question was at POZZALO on this date. I don't know enough about NJ zones to know if perhaps they moved as needed. Bruce
