Two B-24s (467BG) lost 16 August 1944

Hi guys

On 16 August 1944, two B-24s (41-28981 Lt Grace and 42-50580 Lt Prewitte) of the 467th BG were involved in some kind of friendly fire incident over the North Sea, according to my information. Prewitte's aircraft was lost with the death of the entire crew of six. It's possible that Grace's aircraft accidentally shot down Prewitte's aircraft, but I can't be certain.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

A 467th BG website http://www.the467tharchive.org/libraryshelftwo.html
indeed says that 42-50580 was brought down by a jammed stray machine gun from another ship while on a practice mission over the North Sea...

Leendert

Brian,

Also scroll down to 4 March 1945 on mentioned website. It says here that 41-28981 may have been shot down by a British coastal battery on the return leg...

Leendert

Brian,

And finally: both aviationarchaeology.com and accident-report.com give 16 Aug 1944 for 41-28981 to have sustained damage because of (or was involved in?) a friendly fire incident.
Ship not lost that day however.

Regards,

Leendert

Many thanks once again, Leendert

That was a new site for me - most interesting.

We're getting there, gradually.

Cheers
