US Navy Collision June 2 1926, Pensacola, Florida
On June 2 1926 a collision occurred at Escambia Bay, Pensacola, Florida in which Ensign Luther Sweitzer Schmidt of Schwenksville Montgomery County
Pennsylvania was killed. The other pilot is listed in the Caterpillar list as Lt Stuart "E" Ingersoll who I believe is actually Lieut (Jg) Stuart Howe Ingersoll File Number 56896 Lieutenant Ingersoll saved himself from a drop of 2,000 feet by releasing his parachute. The aircraft were engaged in practice combat at high altitude and collided when vision of each other was obscured. The aircraft fell into Pensacola Bay Can anyone please identify the aircraft involved and who was flying what.? Many thanks PS Stuart Howe Ingersoll ended up a Vice Admiral and his son and grandson where also US Naval aviators He was Commander of USS Monterey (CVL-26) in 1944 when the ship caught fire and his actions in fighting the fire managed to save the ship and was awarded the Navy Cross as a result https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_H._Ingersoll |

Re: US Navy Collision June 2 1926, Pensacola, Florida
The aircraft were:
Ens. L.S. Schmidt VE-9 A6467 Lt.(jg) S.H. Ingersoll VE-9 A6468 It was thought that Schmidt was stunned by the impact and so remained in the aircraft.
