Paul-Hubert Rauh - 30 December 1943
Hello
I have read that Hauptmann Paul-Hubert Rauh (31 victories, RK), Staffelkapitän of 3./NJG 4, was shot down by USAAF P-47 fighters on 30 December 1943. Would anyone have the loss list information for his aircraft? Also, on 21 November 1944, serving as Gruppenkommandeur of II./NJG 4, he was shot down by return fire in Ju 88 G-1 (W.Nr. 714 617) and wounded. Would anyone have the tactical code of the aircraft and location for this loss as well? Many thanks. Horrido! Leo Last edited by Leo Etgen; 16th April 2009 at 06:14. |

Re: Paul-Hubert Rauh - 30 December 1943
Leo/Laurent - I can find only one Me 110 claim by P-47s in USAAF on 30 December, 1943.
352nd FG near Chalons, shared between Clark, Hendrian and Zimms - a Probable. |

Paul-Hubert Rauh - 30 December 1943
Hello guys
Laurent, many thanks for your extensive and very helpful reply. It was just what I was needing and then some. Many thanks! I can add that it appears that concerning the 16 July 1943 incident he was shot down by F/O Harold White (12 destroyed and four damaged victories) of 141 Sqn, RAF. I have also read that concerning the 21 November 1944 incident he was shot down by the return fire of the second of his two victims that he claimed that night, Halifax III (MZ377) "AL-D" of 429 Sqn, RAF. Bill, could it be that rather than being shot down by P-47 fighters he was actually shot down by the P-51 fighters of the 353rd FS, 354th FG which claimed a Do 217 over Ludwigshafen-Metz? The Ludwigshafen-Metz area is by far closer to Karlsruhe than Châlons-sur-Marne. For what I know the Merlin-engined P-51 fighter had just made its combat debut and perhaps Rauh mistook these for the more familiar P-47 fighter and for their part the American pilots may have misidentified the two twin-engined, twin-tailed aircraft. What do you think? Horrido! Leo |

Re: Paul-Hubert Rauh - 30 December 1943
Leo --
Your hypothesis that Rauh was downed by 354th FG Mustangs makes sense to me, because: 1. Location is better than the 352nd FG claim. 2. Time is better than the 352nd FG claim. 3. There are no other good possibilities. Altho my RAF claims are incomplete (thanks, Frank Olynyk!), Karlsruhe was too far south for the RAF. 4. Misidentifications by both sides were common, and Do 217 night fighters were very rare in the daylight ETO skies, altho they were claimed fairly frequently. 5. This was the P-51B's first month in combat, and its existence was still being denied by the RLM. Rauh probably hadn't studied a model. The "Do 217" that was claimed as destroyed had a wingman that escaped as a damaged. Do you know any details of Rauh's mission? Did he have a wingman? If so, I'd say you have enuf evidence to claim a match. Horrido! Don |
