Aircraft that looks like a Corsair, but has different Canopy?
Hello,
Does anybody recognise the type of this aircraft? I thought at first sight it is a Corsair, but the canopy looks completely different. Is it a rarer subtype of the Corsair? Thanks, Roger Last edited by Roger Gaemperle; 26th July 2020 at 23:54. |

Have a look at the
Goodyear F2G Corsair or Super Corsair https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodyear_F2G_Corsair

Thanks, that was fast! :-) OK, so it is quite a rare airplane. The photo was in a group of photos taken in Europe. I wonder if this aircraft was in Europe or if the photos were just mixed and were taken somewhere else.

Re: Aircraft that looks like a Corsair, but has different Canopy?
I highly doubt any of the F2G-1 or F2G-2s ever came as far as to Europe.
As far as I can determine none ever went into operational use. A few made it to NATC but that is all I have located. By 1947/8 they had all been wfu and either sold or scrapped. Five survived (one stored and four civil registered). At the point of writing I only think two are in existance. Cheers Stig |

Didn't at least one compete at Reno?

All those sold were used for racing.
I am sure Internet has a lot to say about it. Cheers Stig |

Re: Aircraft that looks like a Corsair, but has different Canopy?
The F2G's were built by Goodyear Aircraft in Akron, Ohio (USA). IIRC there were approx. 17 F2G's produced late 1945. The war ended, none saw combat or were assigned to Squadrons. The photo looks like it could be Ohio.

Roger, a fellow by the name of Rodney Williams knows a lot about F2Gs and their fates.
