Re: Luftwaffe claims on RL5/1446-1462

Hello,
Our colleagues from the "search groups" in Russia are now actively studying these RL5 documents and comparing them with the disaster sites already found. Now it has allowed us to establish some long-standing "riddles" where aircraft or engine numbers were not found, as well as to determine the fate of the crew. The accuracy of specifying the location of some claims by anti-aircraft batteries is about 50 meters and for many there are schemes, as well as there are numbers of Soviet aircraft and the names of the crew (captured). But for local linking on the ground, you need to know where this part was at a specific time period - but this is not a big problem for those who have been working in the local area for many years.

By the way, in addition to the documents mentioned by Andrey (1446-1462), where claims FA and AA are mixed, BAMA also published other anological documents, which are placed in separate divisions (these are documents with numbers from the first thousand - I recently downloaded many AM for JG3, JG 51, JG 52, JG54, although there are much fewer of them than I would like). I also met a lot of NVM. There were even separate documents with an inventory of the supply (or accounting) of equipment and equipment with aircraft and engine numbers. It seems that the example of the mass publication of documents, which has been done by TsAMO for a long time, has not gone unnoticed. Only TsAMO published less than 1% of documents from the period 1941-1945 - I wonder how much progress BAMA will make in this direction.
Best regards,
Kirill

Thanks for this, Kirill. RL5 is a relatively untapped treasure trove compared with many of the other Signaturen at BA-MA.

You mentioned the microfilming project at TsAMO and that they have "published less than 1% of documents from the period 1941-1945." Do you mean 1% of all of the captured German documents stored at TsAMO, or 1% of all captured German documents, including those held at BA-MA Freiburg and elsewhere outside of Russia?

Hello Larry,
when I wrote about TsAMO, I meant % of Soviet documents that are published on the website "Memory of the People". This is a small part of the archive - I can't imagine what efforts and resources are needed to digitize the total volume. What is the share of the published part of the documents from the "500 fund" (trophy documents) I do not know - I have a vague understanding of the volume of this fund.
Best wishes,
Kirill

Thanks for making this more clear, Kirill. It sounds like present and future researchers of the Luftwaffe will not be running out of fresh, unexplored documents any time soon!

Yes I have three claims with 12./NJG 5 between 24th December 1943 and 28th April 1944. Then on 28th October 1944 he claims a Jak-3 at 1130 hrs with Stab./Jg52, which would be his fourth. Then an Il-2 on 11th March 1945 1202 hrs with 10./Jg52. All as an Oberleutnant. I by memory can think of only one other pilot to go from night units to day units, the other ending up with JG53.

The claim on 11th March 1945 is likely to be his fifth, but not sure. I certainly do not think he got another25-30 claims during 1945. He was a Czech pilot born on 25th July 1919.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Hallo Johannes,

Another pilot trasferred from night to day fighter was Hans Heinrich Koenig in JG11, following eye injuries

Hi Keenig, perhaps that's why he was such a good "viermot" specialist !
