Captain Zane S Amell

Apparently the real life version of "Dutch" Imil in the novel "The Hunters", Amell was either a pilot in 63rd FS/56th FG in WW2 or more likely with 64th FS/57th FG (where he played tenor sax in the 64th jazz band). Can anyone give me details of his WW2 service? Born in either 1921 or 1923 in Michigan.

Later newspaper reports after he was killed in a flying accident in 1952 claim he was an ace but dilute the claim by wrting that he destroyed or damaged more than five MiGs in Korea with the 335th FS/4th FG. He claimed three Mig kills with the 4th FG, but I have no details of his "damaged" credits. He also won a martinin-drinking contest!

regards

Keith

Re: Captain Zane S Amell

This lists him in the 64th FS, 57th FG.

Mentioned here as playing trumpet in band.
See page 31 and 32.

Newspaper Article describing him as a "Jet Ace" but goes on to say he shot down 3 Migs and damaged 4 in his 100 missions.

Seems official records only credit him with 3 Migs in Korea.
