Re: Captured Bf 109 G

Hello,

Probably, Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6/Trop VX101 - W.Nr unknown.

No.1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight.

This aircraft was received in damaged condition from the Middle East on 4th February 1944, via the Packing Depot at Southport. It was corroded and had been damaged by machine-gun fire. At first it was not considered worth repairing and its engine was donated to one of the Flight's other '109s. Later it was repaired and made its first flight on 10th April 1944, flown by F/Lt E.R.Lewendon. On 19th May 1944, the aircraft was damaged beyond repair when its starboard undercarriage leg collapsed while it was landing at Thorney Island. This was on the same day that the Flight lost its Ju 88, HM509. On 26th September, VX101 was SoC as Category E2, for use as spares, after 11 hours 10 mins flight time.

Photo caption on p.29, reads; A ground shot of the Bf 109G VX101 captured in the Middle East, during its brief service in 1944 with No.1426 Flight. The origin of the RAF serial number, VX101, is obscure since chronologically numbers prefixed 'VX' were not allotted until late 1947 (Photo - J Mutin collection).
