Flight Lieutenant Grimshaw D.F.C.
D.F.C. FOR EX-LOUGHBOROUGH COLLEGE STUDENT.
The King has been graciously pleased to approve the awarded of the D.F.C. to Fight Lieutenant Grimshaw, who was born in 1917 at Newton-le-Willows, Lancs, where is home is. He was educated at Blackpool Grammar School and Loughborough College. He held a commission in the Royal Engineers in 1940 and became a pilot officer in the RAFVR in 1941. He is entitled to wear the ribbon of the 1939-43 Star. Flight Lieutenant Grimshaw has completed a large number of operational sorties. In December 1943, while on patrol over the Bay of Biscay, his aircraft was attacked by eight Ju 88s. Against heavy odds this officer fought, with great skill and courage and assisted by the fine teamwork and accurate shooting of his crew, succeeded in destroying two of the enemy aircraft before gaining cloud cover after thirty minutes of air combat. Six weeks later the engine of his aircraft caught fire shortly after the take off, but displaying fine airmanship, Flight Lieutenant Grimshaw landed his fully laden flying boat on the sea in the dark without damage.

Date was December 1st (account in "Sunderland at war" by Chaz Bowyer p.117).
