Baltimores SAAF vs Italian Bf.109 (03/07/1943)

Hello

03/07/1943:
In "Spitfire over Sicily" (Excellent),a bomber and a fighter were claimed by Italian Bf.109 of 150° Gruppo.

In a more recent source (Marco Mattioli 2010),150° Gruppo claimed seven P-40 and three bombers shot down, plus three P-40 and a bomber probables.

Four South African Baltimores,an A-20 (47th BG ?) and a P-40 (33th or 324th FG ?) lost.

Someone has more precise information ?

Thank's in advance

michel

Re: Baltimores SAAF vs Italian Bf.109 (03/07/1943)

There were 13 airmen of 21 SAAF Sqdn killed on that day.

Two crews including Baltimore AG877 were possibly lost to Bf109s between Sicily and Favigana Island. One crew (Lt. Oakes SAAF, 2/Lt Smith SAAF, P/O Cleland RCAF, W/O Morrison RCAF - all killed). The second crew included Lt. Meredith SAAF and F/S Prout RAF, these 2 men were killed.

The crews of Major Schravesande SAAF (Pilot) and Capt McBride SAAF (Pilot) are buried at Catania - they included Lieut Campbell SAAF (Obs), 2/Lt Daniels SAAF (WOp/AG), 2/Lt Stopforth SAAF (Air Gunner), F/S Meyer SAAF (WOp/AG) and F/S White SAAF (Air Gunner)

P/O Frank Mellor DFM of 111 Squadron (Spitfire) was killed on that date and is buried at Catania.

It looks as if 52 Sqdn suffered casualties (F/S Armitage (Pilot) and F/S Griffiths (Air Gunner) Tunisia.
