Question Luftwaffe Airfield at Fresnes-les-Montauban, France

I am trying to locate info on the subject airfield. The field was used by I./JG26 during August 1944. I thought they used the airfield just to the east at Vitry-en-Artois but this field was being used by the 3rd Staffel of JG301 at the time. Using Google Earth, the field at Vitry shows up quite well. However, there is no sign of a former airstrip near Fresnes just to the west of Vitry. Does anyone have any info, photos, or data on where this strip was located in relation to Fresnes-les-Montauban?

Cheers, Gary Koch

Hi Gary,

Isn´t your airstrip La Brayelle ? It was located 3km NE from Vitry close to village Brébieres.
I made some researches of history this unknown place not long ago because of my latest article about one force-landed Bloch 152 there.

Regards,
Michal

Hello Michal,

I am certain that Fresnes is the correct location. I have a French source showing this field being used by I./JG26 during the late summer 1944. I also have a copy from the the Flugbuch of Lt. Georg Kiefner (I./JG26) showing him flying several missions from Fresnes beginning 21 Aug 44. It is possible that this was an improvised field that was only used by them for a few weeks.

Cheers, Gary
