He 59 WNr 170

Hi

The aircraft served with 2./SAGr 125 but does anyone know when it was built or lost (if this is the case). Similarly was a Vkz ever applied to the a/c or did it retain its Skz throughout its service?

TIA

Adam

Re: He 59 WNr 170

A He 59 with W.Nr. 170 never existed, nor did Aufkl.Fl.Gruppe 2./125 ever operate a He 59. This Staffel initially used He 114, then converted to Ar 196 in July 1941. The W.Nr. 170 was most likely an Ar 196.

Re: He 59 WNr 170

Hi Seaplanes

Thanks for the info. Although the LEMB Stammkennzeichen DB does list an He 59 "DK+BS" as serving with 2./SAGr 125 in July 1941. There was also an eBay pic a little while ago of this aircraft with '170' clearly shown on the tail of the a/c.

Any further help sorting this out would be appreciated

regards

Adam

Re: He 59 WNr 170

Hello!

For what it is worth.

Hannu Valtonen's "Lufwaffen pohjoinen sivusta" gives He 95B DK+BS as WNr 2584. Soviet fighters strafed the Ruissalo seaplane station at Turku town in July 23th, 1941. They managed to damage also DK+BS.

Is the picture of BK+BS still availabe on net? Do you have the link?

Cheers,
Kari

Re: He 59 WNr 170

He 59 W.Nr. 2584 DK+BS was a He 59E. This aircraft belonged to 9. Seenotstaffel but was a part of a detachment from this Staffel for operations in the eastern Baltics and Bay of Finland. The aircraft just happened to be at the same seaplane station as 2./125 when damaged on 23.07.41.

As for the number 170 on the tail fin of a He 59 does not automatically indicate the W.Nr. It could as well be an internal numbering in a training unit. No He 59 W.Nr. did contain the numbers 170 as part of a W.Nr.

Re: He 59 WNr 170

Sorry, small mistake. The He 59E DK+BS W.Nr. 2584 was at Pansio seaplane station near Turku, Finland, when damaged on 23.07.1941. At the same station was He 114 aircraft of Aufkl.Fl.Staffel 1./125 and not 2./125. The He 114 aircraft of 1./125 had been taken over from 2./125 during July 1941 as soon as the latter unit could replace them with Ar 196.
Staffel 1./125 had initially been equipped solely with He 60 aircraft, but from late June or early July operated a mix of He 60 and He 114 until the unit transferred to List on 7.11.1941 for conversion to BV 138.
Hope this does not sound too confusing.

Re: He 59 WNr 170

Thank you both for the corrections. I just saw the 170 on the tail of the a/c and assumed it was a partial WNr.

Any idea on how badly damaged the a/c was during the strafing run?

regards

Adam
