Bristol, 25th November 1940

On Monday 25th November 1940 the day following the first Bristol Blitz I observed from NW Bristol an aircraft (German?) flying South East over Bristol trailing smoke. It was shortly after the air raid sirens sounded in the early afternoon. Have always presumed it was a reconnissance aircraft but have never been able to find out.
Can anybody help me with some information. I was 11 years old at the time
