I doubt Lyons was still with the group in May 45. There is some info on this link. I would interpret it to mean Lyons had originally named the plane and he flew some 88 missions with the group. Lyons survived the war.
In the May 45 crash, the pilot was Nogle. The plane was written off. http://shopwornangel.imaginarynumber...-loss-of-plane. May 12, 1945. 43-34181 Y5-O “Lak-A-Nookie” 495th. Aircraft named by its assigned pilot, 1st Lt. Jack L Lyons. Entered combat with the 344th BG / 495th BS on 14/8/44. Flew 88 combat missions and survived the war. Undercarriage collapsed on landing at A-78 Florennes / Juzaine, France on 12/5/45 after a tire burst on touchdown. The aircraft suffered Cat.4 damage and was written off. The pilot was Robert E Nogle. There are some pictures of the plane here (search for 43-34181) http://www.344bg-b26.org/ Note the pic6 seems to show it with some major damage (possibly after the crash landing?). |

I would agree with you that pic 6 shows the damage from the crash landing.
Looks like the left main gear collapsed damaging the left wing and #1 engine, while the right main gear stayed extended with no damage visible to the #2 propeller. You can order a copy of the accident report from here. http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/s...181&Submit4=Go |
