Identity of four Lt. pilots of prob. I./ZG1, taken before 15.7.40?

Dear all,

Who could help me identify these four Leutnant pilots of (probably) I./ZG1; the photo I believe was taken before 15 July 1940. The only know pilot to me is Lt. Knacke, on the far right.

Cheers and thanks for any info,

Theo

Perhaps the photo was taken a couple of years earlier, when the Gruppe was known as II.(schwere)/JG 132? There is a photo of three young officers in Eric Mombeeck's series of books on JG 2, Volume 1, page 31. Some of these may be a match.

Thanks for your replies chaps. And Sidney; I've no info that Knacke did serve with II.(schwere)/JG132 before he joined 3./ZG1. I don't have the Mombeek book that you mention -perhaps someone who does could compare the officers in both photos and see if there's a (partial) match?

Cheers, Theo

Hello Theo,

The man to the right of Knacke shows similarity with the Leutnant on the I./ZG 1 group photo to the far right but... still no names known to me. Will check my file of portraits pictures (partially unknown men of the I./NJG 1) whether there are any hits tonight.

Best regards, Marcel

Thanks for that Marcel -it would be great if you could find any matching faces. And Snautzer; could you please post a link to the ebay auction of the photo?

Cheers and thanks, Theo

Re: Identity of four Lt. pilots of prob. I./ZG1, taken before 15.7.40?

Hello Theo,

It took more time than expected but no other men of your photo do match with men of which I do have photo's but no names. On the other hand, I have several Leutnante in my 434 names list of flying personel of the I./NJG 1 which I can't match to any photo's... Grrr!

We should not forget that many men of the I./ZG 1 were not taken over in the I./NJG 1 whereas this last unit got many new members from other ZG units (or NJ-Schule).

So, unfortunately no further info... Best regards,

Marcel
