Back a bit? In what way was the He111P's payload capability less than that of the H? I feel the engine situation was quite enough to justify the dropping of this variant, obviously but other factors could influence the decision. I don't see/know how the internal arrangements differ, and carrying bombs externally would be every bit as penalising to the H as to the P.
