Re: Photos 10-9

Post No.8: I really don't mind, but the first photo caption states the base as Siwerskaya (i.e., Siverskiy, 60 km from Leningrad), and that is exactly where III./JG 54 was based in mid-September 1941 - see the 7./JG 54 Bf 109 F-2 in the background. So, I am not sure about your reference to Rapla airfield.

Sinisa

Re: Photos 10-9

Sidney,

I think we really need a Siwerskaya and Krasnogwardeisk background and environment data base.
And to decide what are the places and the vocabulary - and orthography - to be used when referring to them.
Like real historians we pretend to be.
...
This is the first mention ever about "Siverskiy" I did read. thanks for that.

Best regards, Franck.

Re: Photos 10-9

Franck, you are welcome

There are number of different pronunciations of the locality - here is the one from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siversky

The airfield has been used by the Russian Air Force until recently, with apparently very limited improvements needed after the Germans abandoned it in early 1944.

Sinisa

OK!

But in every UN, Assyrian experts, birds protection, CITES, Linne classification and so on ...
People do decide for a commun, accepted, vocabulary.
Can we do that?

Hello!

I wrote "I/KG77 Junkers 88s from autumn 1941. This was the period when the Gruppe was subordinated to Fliegerführer Ostsee for few days in September 1941 and flew from Kuusiku, Estonia.". This does mean that the photos are from the same period (autumn 1941) when I/KG 77 did spend few days at Kuusiku. More specifically 12.-17.9.1941 (ref: http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/kg77.htm ). I did not write or suggest that the photos were taken at Kuusiku. Just that they are from the same period. I/KG 77 transferred to Siverskaja 17.9.1941 from Kuusiku.

Cheers,
Kari

PS Kiitos, Matti!

Re: Photos 10-9

Post No.14: Franck, we generally have incorrect German spelling of the Russian toponyms used as a reference. To actually identify the exact location sometimes one needs to recover the original Russian name for the same location. Sometimes it is not necessary, like in this particular case - Siwerskaya, or Siverskiy or Siversky - would all lead to the same geographical location. In my post I just offered the correct name of the settlement for the general reference purposes.
