Re: LDV (Home Guard) shoot civliians?

Here is one from August 23, 1940.

Another from August 22, 1940:

Also a complaint from August: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/9962...olnshire-echo/

This story (also from August) shows they did not always shoot civilians.

It is astonishing the number of killings committed by the Home Guard. Notably not as many as are regularly reported in the USA every year, but it does show clearly what happens when you arm a militia or police force and inform them that if they kill someone, accidentally or otherwise, they will receive leniency. Luckily the UK learned that lesson and disarmed and disbanded the Home Guard post-war.

'but it does show clearly what happens when you arm a militia or police force and inform them that if they kill someone, accidentally or otherwise, they will receive leniency.' - where does it say they were told that?

Re: LDV (Home Guard) shoot civliians?

I have read somewhere that the extra mortality due to the road accidents in blackout killed more British in 1939 than the Germans. Killings by the Home Guard were only a small part of the "indirect" dead of WWII, that are not always counted as war victimes (like extra disease mortality, suicides due to a loss of a loved one in war or (as I know a case in France) being killed by the fall of the ruins of a bombed house).

By the war, such paranoid attitude by the Home Guard has its human cost, but on the other hand one of its result was that almost German spies landed in Britain were quickly caught, so saving lives.

Ed,
There is the (perhaps online available) Home Guard Training Pocket Manual and/or the Home Guard Manual which must have included the RoE.

Re: LDV (Home Guard) shoot civliians?

Hi guys

Extremely grateful for all the contributions - my knowledge of the subject had been greatly enhanced. I hope to include much of this (with due acknowledgment) in my forthcoming publication.

Another query arising from this topic - were there any such incidents concerning Luftwaffe personnel?

Many thanks, stay safe
Brian
