W/C Peter William Archdale Dudgeon, DFC ( RAFO 70934 )
Good night to all!
I am looking for more details about W/C P W A Dudgeon, DFC ( RAFO 70934 ). I know he was awarded the DFC while flying Lysanders with 16 Squadron. After his First Tour of operations he later Commanded a Reconaissance Squadron equipped with Mustangs Ia. I would like to know which Squadron and the period he remained OC; as well as his other activities during WW2. Many thanks in advance for any DATA about this officer. Yours Adriano Baumgartner |

Hello Andy!
Quite a long time since we last talked... May I ask you if you do know ( possibly from ORBs ) to where W/C Dudgeon, DFC went after passing the command of 268 Squadron? An OTU? Staff job? Thanks a lot for answering and your help Adriano |

Re: W/C Peter William Archdale Dudgeon, DFC ( RAFO 70934 )
Wing Commander PWA Dudgeon DFC RAFR. Officer Commanding No.268 Squadron RAF, November 9, 1942 to April 19, 1943. Posted to HQ Army Co-operation Command to a staff position.
Had attended Eton and RAF Cranwell. Had resigned from RAF pre-War and entered RAF Reserve. Recalled to service 1939. Awarded DFC in July 1940 for service with No.16 Squadron (see below). In 1945 was Accident Prevention and Investigation Officer at HQ 2TAF (still a Wg Cdr) and was instrumental in getting rear facing seats fitted into Avro Ansons used by Communications Flights in 2TAF in order to reduce injuries and fatalities in landing accidents. His brother then Air Commodore (later AVM) A G 'Tony' Dudgeon then championed the idea which was taken up by RAF Transport Command and used for some years on RAF transport types. Still listed in Royal Air Force Reserve of Officers as a Squadron Leader retaining the rank of Wing Commander in June 1954. Born 1908, died 15 February 1967. Married, two sons. DUDGEON, Peter William Archdale, P/O (70934, Royal Air Force) - No.16 Squadron - awarded as per London Gazette dated 23 July 1940. Public Record Office Air 2/6075 has citation. "In spite of heavy anti-aircraft fire, this officer pressed home a bombing attack on transport on the road south of Boulogne on 22nd May 1940. The aileron control was shot away, and the aircraft was almost unflyable, but by great skill and coolness, he managed to return to this unit. He has shown great energy, keenness and drive."

Re: W/C Peter William Archdale Dudgeon, DFC ( RAFO 70934 )
Colin Ford,
Many thanks for the additional information about W/C Dudgeon, DFC. I did not know about his earlier career, before the outbreak of war, neither his post-war career. Found an Air Vice Marshal Dudgeon who was awarded an OBE but did not know he was the brother of W/C Peter. Have you flown under his command? Do you remember him? What was he like? ( as OC )? Yours, and thank you a lot! Adriano |

Re: W/C Peter William Archdale Dudgeon, DFC ( RAFO 70934 )
Adriano,
W/C Dudgeon DFC was well and truly before my time. My connection to the Squadron is via a family member and as its historian, I did not serve with 268 Squadron. So can not give you any first hand impressions. At the time W/C Dudgeon was with No.268 Squadron they only had the Mustang Mk.I, Mk.IA arrived about 2 months after he was posted out.
