Re: Identify crashed Fairey Battle

Hello Peter,
Thanks for picture.
Looks like the serial number has been added to the picture either before or after developing ?
Also the code letters do in this photo seem to be "JN" while in that of the 1st post look to me to be different, so perhaps two separate aircraft in same or similar territory ?
Alex

Alex,

I prefer a simpler approach and tend to accept things at face value even when they do not conform with my accepted view of the world. Hopefully the attached may satisfy your reservations.

Re: Identify crashed Fairey Battle

Hello, Peter,
The two pictures in your post above do show the Squadron code to be " JN" from what I see.
So a/c is a 150 Sqdn a/c , yes ?
L5524 - P/O. A.R. Gulley killed, Sgt. Berry and Lac. D.L.Phillips captured.

Re: Identify crashed Fairey Battle

Alex,

Yes. As correctly stated by Martin GLEESON in post #3 of this thread & confirmed by Loic MARCHAND in post #6.

150 SQUADRON, HOUSSAY Battle L5524. Shot down by Uffz Vollmer of 3./JG3 during attack on enemy columns between Vernon and Evreux, crash-landed and burned out near Aigleville 9.30 a.m. Pilot Officer A. R. Gulley killed. Sergeant H. Berry and LAC D. L. Phillips both captured badly wounded. Aircraft a write-off.
The date of death of Alfred Gulley is recorded by the CWGC as June 14. LAC Donald Phillips was later reported in hospital in Amiens but subsequently escaped and successfully evaded eventually returning to England via Gibraltar aboard SS Aquila. He was the first RAF airman to be awarded the Military Medal for escape and evasion. Berry, badly burned on both face and hands, escaped from hospital in Rouen on Sept 13, headed south via Paris, and finally reached safety on Jan 24, 1941. He was repatriated from Gibraltar on June 2, 1941.

Re: Identify crashed Fairey Battle

Hi Peter

A question:
Why Fw Vollmer and not Lt Stange who claims also a battle (Vernon)

Two battle of 150°Sqd lost in the same region, same hour (Vernon)
Battle L 5524 crashed:Aigleville

Battle L 5437 crashed:Merey

Merey-Aigleville=23 Km

Re: Identify crashed Fairey Battle

Michel,

Quite so - I concede your point with no defence. Entries could more correctly read thus:

13 June 1940 150 SQUADRON, HOUSSAY Battle L5524. Shot down by Bf109s of 3./JG3 during attack on enemy columns between Vernon and Evreux, crash-landed and burned out near Aigleville 9.30 a.m. Possibly that claimed by Uffz Vollmer. Pilot Officer Alfred Richard Gulley killed. Sergeant H. Berry and Leading Aircraftman Donald Leslie Phillips both captured badly wounded. Aircraft a write-off.

13 June 1940 150 SQUADRON, HOUSSAY Battle L5437. Shot down by Bf109s of 3./JG3 during attack on enemy columns between Vernon and Evreux and crashed at Merey 9.30 a.m. Possibly that claimed by Lt Stange. Pilot Officer Roy Cuthbert Beale, Sergeant Harold James Frank Tutt, and Sergeant Douglas Barfield Carter all killed. Aircraft a write-off.
