Lübeck 1945 - 262s, 190s, 88s and Others
Below is a link to a Flickr set I've created from a collection of photos that belonged to my late Dad. He was in the service echelon of 486 New Zealand Squadron, which took him to Lübeck in 1945, which is where I think these pictures were taken. The presence of Me262 "White 7" minus its nose gear seems to support this (sample picture below). Any extra information, comments or corrections would be gratefully received, such as what exactly the single-engined transport is. Is it a Ju-46?

Dear Ian,
First of all, thanks for sharing those highly interesting pictures taken by your father. I'm currently away from home so can't check in my references. To answer your question about the single engined transport plane, it is a Junker Ju 34 Hau. This type was mainly used by flying school training units and or unit hacks. Another plane already, fully known is the Fw 190 in British markings. You will get a lot if answers to your questions here. Sincerely Marc |

Hello Calderi,
First a hearty, "Thank you" to your late father. I just lost my WWII veteran father last month. Those young people were genuine heroes. Second, the last aircraft in your posting is a Junkers W 34 hi, used for training and transport. Finally, thank you for posting these beautiful photographs. I will try to write a few comments on some of the other aircraft as soon as possible. Steve Sheflin |

Me 262 White 7 was being ferried after capture (surrender) at Fassberg.

Also note worthy is the photo of the partly dismanteled Fw 190 red? "6". I seem to see something like a (part of a) snake body. Only one other Fw 190 with this design is known, red "8".

Correct! According to the excellent KG26 unit history by Alexander Steenbeck, 3 Ju 188 and 11 Ju 88 torpedo bombers of KG26 landed at Lübeck-Blankensee on 8 May 1945 after their flight to the Kurland pocket (where they had helped to evacuate German soldiers). HTH, Marcel PS: Ian, great pictures! Thanks so much for posting! BTW: Do you have any more of Lübeck, such as Ju 88 G-6 nightfighters without radar antennas perhaps (suspected I./KG66 machines)? |
