Re: Spitfire VcT 04.05.1944. Doli (Croatia) W/O Stenning

Drew,

Thanks for the added details and the code for EF750. This is indeed an enigma and without further sources will probably remain so. If Ian of Adelaide (aka Aussie7) is out there perhaps he can let us know where his info on that 7 April claim came from.

Russell,

I wouldn't be too quick about changing the entry for this claim found in MAW4. My reading of the Form 540 is that the claim was indeed on the morning mission involving 6 Spit. Vs led by Watson. The first two lines on the entry for 7 April refer to this mission, while the next four refer to the p.m. bomber escort. The wording seems to indicate that Watson was solely responsible for the claim.

Regards,
Tom

Tom and Drew

It depends how you read it I suppose, its a beautifully imprecise account of the days activities. Not as bad as one I have found for Vol 5 on the Aegean when two Beaufighter Squadrons sent out a joint patrol, both ORBS mention the patrol, but only one states their was a fight and claims losses and it was not the unit suffering the losses! Back to 7 April given the afternoon bomber escort was to the location mentioned in Stennings diary and nothing happened, then the morning comes back into play. That only leaves why people not on the morning mission appeared in the RAF Commands forum as sharing the claim, when they were all on the afternoon mission????.

Maybe somebody else tried reverse reading the ORB!. It really is one of the worst ones I have read. Not only because of lack of detail, but random bits of it are missing. Try finding the page in the 540 for 17th March 44, I cannot.

Currently working on VOL 5, but if anyone wants to help with additions/corrections to Vols 1 to 4, let me know as it looks as though we will have space for a corrections update section. A lot of the updates relate to the Air 81 files that were not out when we did Vols 1-3, and also a lot more info about on Luftwaffe losses that are not in the books.

I shall see if I have the relevant group/wing war diary and see what it says.

Cheers

Russ
