1H+BK crash
This Heinkel He111 aircraft crashed off of Whitehills (Banff) at Melrose Head (not heard of that one).
The crew were The crew (Oblt.Hatto Kühn (pilot), and Uffz. F. Grossardt, Gefr. M. Hänel, and Uffz. Männling) were captured and shipped to Canada? The aircraft belonged to II./KG26 (part of I./KG26 -Löwengeschwader ), which at the time was based at Aalborg-West, Denmark. Is this all correct? |

Re: 1H+BK crash
Thanks Chris
I know Whitehills, but unable to find any reference to Melrose head. Crash time I have is 19:57, so did a bit more research. The British Newspaper Archive has an article from 1976 about Herr Hatto Kuhn who recently retired from the West German Airforce as a Lieut. Colenel. He was sent a set of photos from the salvage of one of the engines from his plane The article quotes from Kuhn "on the Banffshire coast at Melrose, a few miles east of Macduff. It says they were in a dinghy , paddled ashore and were detained by auxiliary Coastguards until Police arrived led by Chief Constable George I. Strath. So They crashed off Melrose, East of Macduff, so not sure where Whitehills came into it (unless the published info misread the 1976 article which says the engine was landed at Whitehills by the diving group. The Germans thought they had crashed off Cruden Bay according to Chief Constable Strath. http://www.academia.edu/34263697/Luf...een_1_Mar_1941 https://www.britishnewspaperarchive....61216/081/0009 |

Re: 1H+BK crash
Morning all, can anybody confirm the engines on this aircraft. Would they be Daimler Benz DB603 or 605s?

Re: 1H+BK crash

Re: 1H+BK crash
Interesting.
The reason I asked is when the Strathallan Aircraft Collection was broken up around 1981, the only two engines listed for Auction were a The Daimler Benz ones. It would appear that in the auction in 1981, they didn't sell. As the one recovered would have been exposed to seawater, it would likely just have been scrapped (the effort to get it ashore and to the museum seems to have been wasted) |
