Maj Glenn E. Duncan (353rd FG)

Hi!

Does anyone know what was the badge painted on the cowling starboard side of his P-47D 42-8634 ("Dove of Peace IV)?
Looks like there was also a motto ending by the latin word "mori".

Thanks.

Chris

Re: Maj Glenn E. Duncan (353rd FG)

I have the book on the 353 FG but I have to dig it out.
His P-47 was first called "Flying Death" but higher ups did not like the name so Col. Duncan changed it to "Dove of Pease" sarcastically.
So his logo makes more sence with the name "Flying Death".
I think it is in the book this story.

Re: Maj Glenn E. Duncan (353rd FG)

I didn't have to dig it out after all.
I thought the photo was clearer but I can't make out the top words either.
The photo you have is the same as in the book or you are going by the book photo.
Might be another P-47 because there is couple of photo's of his P-47 with the skeliton art on bothsides.
Sorry I'm not much help.

Re: Maj Glenn E. Duncan (353rd FG)

According to Rust's "The Slybird Group", there were at least three aircraft flown by Duncan. The picture in the book of (olive drab) P47 (4)28634 shows the flying skeleton as being on the port side cowling, as does the picture of another (Natural finish) P47 with the same name, (4)225971...

At the back of the book is a drawing of yet another "Natural finish" P47, supposedly flown by Duncan, again with the same name but with the S/N of (4)225506, but is difficult to see on the line drawing of '506 if the flying skeleton was painted on both sides of the cowling....

Re: Maj Glenn E. Duncan (353rd FG)

OOps' Forgot Rust had a book on the 353 FG.
I was talking about "Jonah's Feet Are Dry" by Cross.
Found this from Little Friends.

He used 7 P-47's going by the Little Friend sight .
Most lost by other pilots I'm sure.

Yes, I know that photograph. It comes from US NARA.
But its quality is so poor you can't see a damned thing.
Thanks anyway.

I found some cool USAAF VIII raw footage gun camera films. Reel 3/3 has Duncan taking out ground targets.

I can't stop watching it.

Enjoy, -Dave
