This would appear to be the same crash (a DFS 230) which resulted in the death of RK-holder Hptm Armin Thiede. I have seen photos which show a RK-holders medals at a funeral the same time that Schall was killed but there is a DKiG amongst them and I have no record that Thiede had the DKiG so who else was on the glider?

Re: Uffz Engelbert Schall II/StG 151

In the case of Engelbert , no crash in cause, they hv been overran by terrorists/Resistants ( choose the more adequate term up to you)
In the Sail-plane we find

Back nikolaus uffz f t
Denk karl fw b t
Hohmann karl hptm f t
Rosenberg josef uffz bf t
Thiede armin hptm b t gr,kdr,
Winter hellmuth oblt f t

That day there are some more casualties among non-flying pers. with the StG151 3 wounded , so 12 people in a DFS230 a bit to much I am afraid

DFS230 wore the STK PD+GK

Re: Uffz Engelbert Schall II/StG 151

I have for DFS 230:
1943-07-09, 3./St.G 151, DFS 230, 12042, PD+GK, Ostrice bei Varasdin, Absturz infolge Abmontieren der Tragfläche. Bruch 100 %. (Should WNr be 127042?)
Flugzeugführer Uffz Back, Nikolaus, tot
Flugzeugführer Hptm Hohmann, Karl, tot
Flugzeugführer (Gruppenkommandeur) Hptm Thiede, Armin, tot
Flugzeugführer Olt Winter, Hellmuth, tot
Beobachter Fw Lenk, Karl, tot
Bordfunker Uffz Rosenberg, Josef, tot
Flzg.-Mech. Gefr Körner, Robert, tot
Bo-Pers. Fw Burmeister, Walter, tot
(Oblt Winter von 4./KG 51?)

Problem is, that NVM for Forster, Schall and Simon contains no info on aircraft and specifically states Bandenüberfall. Maybe it was a pure coincidence, that they were killed on the same day as that glider crashed?

Re: Uffz Engelbert Schall II/StG 151

I don't have any SKZ for DFS 230s in the 127xxx range, or 122xxx range for that matter, but could WNr. have been 122042?

Re: Uffz Engelbert Schall II/StG 151

Obermaier, in his Die Ritterkreuzträger der Luftwaffe, Band II, s.149, states that thirteen other soldiers were killed by partisans during the recovery of the bodies, so that may explain the absence of an aircraft reference in their deaths.

Hello all,

According to eyewitnesses, the plane that was initialy towing the DFS 230 landed near the crash-site of the glider. Nerby partisans attacked the crew and forced them to run back to the plane and subsequnetly to take-off.
it would be possible that Forster, Schall and Simon were among the crew or passangers on that plane. Unfortunately, no one could remember the type of the plane which landed. Are there any other damage reports for that day that could be conected to this incident? The plane with the DFS 230 took off from Agram-Borongaj and was heading north.
