Major Baier, Jagdgruppe 88

Several books discussing Legion Condor and the German engagement in Spanish Civil war in general, mention that the first commander of J/88 was Major Baier, who suddenly fell ill (heart trouble acc. to Ries/Ring) and had to return to Germany, being replaced by Hauptmann Hubertus Merhart von Bernegg. However, none of the authors provides a full ID of the said Major - could it be the then Major Eberhard Baier, a fighter pilot during WWI and according to various sources:
- commander of St.G. 162 whose Stab was disbanded in November 1936 (Michael Holm website: http://ww2.dk/air/attack/stg162.html)
- commander of II./St.G. 162 until 31 March 1936 and commander of St.G. 165 from 1 April 1937 to October 1938 (Dive Bomber & Ground Attack Units of the Luftwaffe 1933-45 Vol.1, p. 154 & 158) - but the entry in Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries compiled by the same authors also includes the following information: 01.02.37 Maj., Offz.z.b.V. with R.d.L. (Sonst.Offz.) to temporary duty with the RLM (to 28.02.37).

Can anyone cast some light on this?
