German grids September 1939

Hi,

I`m looking for positions of two German grids (probably Kriegsmarine) that were used in September 1939:
9496
2187

Regards

Robert

Re: German grids September 1939

Hi Robert

Naval grids were given with two letters and four numbers, so if your positions are naval grids they are missing the two letters that gave the general region of the grid.

If the positions were reported from the North Sea (AN) they are:
AN 9496 is approx. 54°45'N, 09°25'W, on land, south of Flensburg
AN 2187 is approx. 60°03'N, 00°36'W, over sea, south-east of Lerwick, Shetlands
If the positions were reported from the Baltic Sea (AO) they are:
AO 9496 is approx. 54°45'N, 18°25'E, over sea, off Schwarzau (today Swarzewo)
AO 2187 is approx. 60°03'N, 15°36'E, on land, near Sörbo, Sweden

Re: German grids September 1939

Hello Rainer,

thanks for you help. This is of course Baltic Sea. 9496 seems to be correct but with second I have a problem. Perhaps there was a typo in KTB because this aircraft was a few minutes earlier over military harbor in Gdynia (grid 2236) and 30 minutes earlier reported that a submarine was sighted in grid 2036. Can you identify the latter grid?

Regards

Robert

Re: German grids September 1939

Hello robert,

the last code is not valid, cause it includes an 0, which is not a part of the grid. So this must bei another coding method.

Re: German grids September 1939

Hi Robert

Gunnar is right, those positions were not reported as naval grids as Gdynia would have been in AO 9811.
