Ju 88D-1 W.Nr 430645 "F6+NL" of 3(F)/123

Hello,
On 3 July, 1943 Ju 88D-1 W.Nr 430645 "F6+NL" of 3.(F)/123 failed to return from a night reconnaissance mission in the area between Eastbourne and the Isle of Wight.

It was the victim of S/L Chisholm of Fighter Interception Unit ?

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Ju 88D-1 W.Nr 430645 "F6+NL" of 3(F)/123

Hello,

The original losses are found online in the Bundesarchiv in file RL 2-III/1191 on page 196.

If you log in and use the search feature on this forum for "430645" it will give further info in thread # 480288.

There were two Ju 88 D-1s of 3.(F)/122 crewed by 3.(F)/123 missing that night.

Jim

Re: Ju 88D-1 W.Nr 430645 "F6+NL" of 3(F)/123

W/C Chisholms combat report shows the weather as haze up to 4000 ft. and clear above . He was at 3000 ft. when Blackgang control told him to reduce height as quickly as possible and vectored him onto a low flying bandit his contact was difficult due to getting sea returns . Blackgang handed him over to Beachy control who gave a vector onto the same? bandit . He then obtained contact on another bandit which he eventually shot down seeing it hit the water and explode giving his height as between 200 and 300 ft. So it would appear Chisholm had contact with both missing aircraft with one likely hitting the sea due to operating at low level in hazy conditions and the one he shot down .
Both of the German crews are shown as missing with the Bs of F6+OL Uffz Paul Preys ( Preis in other sources) being changed from missing to dead in GQM dated 20.5.1944 . Could not find a grave record for him so possibly just a recognition at the request of a relative that he was officially dead ?

I have a note that Uffz Paul Preis was "tot angeschwemmt 08 Sept 1943 am Strande von Quend-Plage".
Originally buried 09.09.1943 at 14.30 in "Ehrenfriedhof Abbeville/Somme. Grab 10".

That fits with the registration card here: https://www.fold3.com/image/699655693?terms=paul,preis

(I had to look up Quend — it is on the stretch of coast between Le Touquet and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme).
