Monica Nancy Jane Grose - WAAF
Does Anybody have any more info than this :-
WAAF Corporal MNJ Grose died at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary from a head injury. Her Death Certificate states she died “1945 September Ninth 5h 0m P.M. at the Royal Infirmary Aberdeen. On the reverse of the Extract of an entry in a Register of Deaths is an extract from Register of Corrected Entries (Vol 10, page 57), which states under Cause of Death “Increased Intracranial Pressure Secondary to Fracture of Skull, Subarachnoid Haemorrhage and Cerebral Laceration (the result of being thrown out of RAF Motor Lorry when said Lorry struck a Wall)”. Any additional info, like location of the crash (or actual date of the accident) Board of Inquiry findings etc. |

Re: Monica Nancy Jane Grose - WAAF
She was an Equipment Cpl in 70 Wg. Torry Road, Aberdeen and the accident was the same day; she died in Forrester Row (?) Hospital. No chance of the BoI

Re: Monica Nancy Jane Grose - WAAF
Hi Chris
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is also known as Forresterhill Hospital Was the accident on Torry Road Aberdeen? There isn't a Trorry Road in Aberdeen (there is a place called Torry) I wonder if they meant the coast road between Cove and Torry which has several bad bends etc. 70 wg, is this 70 Wing? I have no idea what they do/did, can you advise? |

Re: Monica Nancy Jane Grose - WAAF
Just found this....
"This was signed at Procurator Fiscals Office Stonehaven 26th September 1945, which was 15 days after signing the original entry in the Register of Deaths." This would suggest the accident wasn't in Aberdeen, but in Aberdeenshire else the Aberdeen P.F. would have signed it. There is a suggestion the lorry was on it's way back from RAF Edzell (reference to an American Airbase) however there were none in the area, and later in the cold war, the Americans occupied RAF Edzell for communications activities. perhaps that's what they meant. Where did the "Torry Road" reference come from? |

Re: Monica Nancy Jane Grose - WAAF
Thanks Chris. It may be she was billeted in Torry.
I did wonder if the accident was earlier as she was from Cornwall. Her mother signed the register the day after (10th). If the accident was on the Sunday 9th, how quick would they have got in contact with her Mother to go to Aberdeen from Cornwall. I suspect her Mother maybe was in Aberdeen already (Her father died when she was 18 and not other brothers/sisters) Does anybody know what 70 Wing of the WAAF did in Sept 1945? |

Re: Monica Nancy Jane Grose - WAAF
More info
70 (signals) Wing was based at RAF Tealing near Dundee, Corp Grose was based at RAF Schoolhill which was a chain home radar station. Letters from the MOD suggest the accident was on 8th Sept, death certificate says 9th Sept. It appears the American Airbase reference in various other sites is a bit of a red herring, as is the fact she is buried at Old Dyce Graveyard next to what was RAF Dyce but appears she didn't work there. It is possible she was billeted there as I don't believe there was accommodation at the Radar station. Does anybody have any details on RAF Schoolhill or better still a layout map? |
