Beside what Nick says (it is a long distance), you also have to consider that Scheer was wounded the day before when he baled out after being shot down (as Leo points out). I agree we don't know the seriousness of his wounds, but you do have to consider there are two effects here, one being shot down (psychological), and two being wounded (physical). How likely is it, considering that 8./JG 53 probably had more pilots available than aircraft, that the unit would send him up already the next day instead of somebody else? The situation for Germany (in Italy) and on the Eastern Front was serious but I don't believe it was that serious that it would be a first option. Cheers Stig
