29 November 1943

Hi Pats

I have for JG 1:

29 November 1943: Oberleutnant Heinrich Klöpper, Staffelkapitän of 7./JG 1, killed in Bf 109 G-6/U4 "White 1" (W.Nr. 410 106), crashed returning from aerial combat due to bad weather, southwest of Meppel
29 November 1943: Oberfähnrich Manfred Spörk of 7./JG 1 killed in Bf 109 G-6 "White 3" (W.Nr. 15 930), crashed returning from aerial combat due to bad weather, southwest of Meppel
29 November 1943: Oberfeldwebel Hermann Brackhagen of 7./JG 1 killed in Bf 109 G-6 "White 5" (W.Nr. 15 285), crashed returning from aerial combat due to bad weather, southwest of Meppel

All three pilots of the Kette were killed when they dove into low clouds and did not pull up in time. I hope this helps out somewhat.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: German crashes - 29 Nov 1943 - Vollenhove - The Netherlands

Leo,

This is what I have so far
Oldenhof - crash location Klöpper - is WSW of Meppel

Crash location Bergkampen/Kadoelen is 1500 m to the East
of Klöpper location. - so also WSW of Meppel -

Location Brackhagen "unknown" so far .......got an idea
but have to verify this with a "crash" map.

Further Werke nr. are "slighty" different .... another format ?

1 KIA

Oberleutnant Heinrich Klöpper, Staffelkapitän of 7./JG 1, was killed 29th Nov 1943
This German fighter was shot down in a dogfight by 2 American P-38 - Lightnings -
came down near castle "de Oldenhof" - just outside Vollenhove - located WSW of Meppel
Same castle were 2 EVD's from the "Sleepy Lagoon" were hiding for 2 weeks in 1945
On the 10th of March 1984 they recovered parts of the plane and got certainty about the pilot's name

..........
see here the story - seven weeks earlier - of his 87th victim Capt. Frank D. Murphy
navigator on a B-17 Flying Fortress of the 100th Bomb Group
on a clear sunny autumn afternoon of October 10, 1943

...... Oberleutnant Heinrich Klöpper, then twenty-five years of age, was one of Germany’s top 100
scoring fighter pilot aces of WWII. Official German wartime records credit him with 94 aerial victories
He was a holder of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross and Golden Goblet when he shot us down
We were his 87th victim
Seven weeks later, on November 29, 1943, Oblt. Klöpper himself was killed
in a dogfight with two American P-38 fighter aircraft.
(For a perspective of Oblt Klöpper’s accomplishments,
the all time leading American air ace is Maj. Richard Bong who was
credited with shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft in the Pacific theatre in WWII) ......

Both of Klöpper's wingman didn't either return that day

All three pilots of the "Kette" - Klöpper, Brackhagen and Spörk - lost their life 29 Nov 1943

Bf 109G-6 - "Weisse 5" - Werke Nr. 510285 ( 15 285 ) - 7./JG 1 - Ofw. Hermann Brackhagen -
Zwolse Diep ? - Zwartewater ?
crashed returning from aerial combat due to bad weather, SW of Meppel
- location unknown -

Bf 109G-6 - "Weisse 3" - Werke Nr. 510930 ( 15 930 ) - 7./JG 1 - Oberfähnrich Manfred Spörk -
Bergkampen / Kadoelen
crashed returning from aerial combat due to bad weather, WSW of Meppel
- location known -

Bf 109G-5 - Werke Nr. 27100 - 5./JG 3 - Uffz. F. Kostenbader - Biddinghuizen, Flevopolder
Bf 109G-5 - Werke Nr. 27100 - 5./JG 3 - Markings Schwa 9 - recovered + 1x MIA
by RNLAF-11(10) - Nov 1962 - East-Flevoland -
- location known -

- Locations and names have to be checked more careful - info PATS -

Bergkampen / Kadoelen crash location is known to me and verified - 2 witnesses
Klöpper 94th claim was a P38 - near Hasselt S. of Meppel - time 14:15
Six P-38's were lost that day
The P-38 of 2nd Lt. Hascall - Belt Schutsloot - could be his "94" claim
Base ( Volkel or Leeuwarden ), time and crash locations has to be reviewed again !!!

The 510xxx WNr. are wrong for 1943. These would be Bf 109G-14s. The earliest I have for this WNr. block are in August 1944. John Manrho's WNr. from the 15xxx block are definitely much more appropriate for 1943.
