Re: identify B26 bomber crash

If H6 is correct for the code, that combination was carried by the 735th Bomb Squadron, 453rd Bomb Group, which flew B-24's with the Eighth Air Force.

Re: identify B26 bomber crash

Second pic appears to show code JU, used by 707th BS, 44th BG, also a B-24 unit.
There was loss of B-24J 42-51356 on 4 Nov 1944 near Hildesheim, which brings us in vincinity of Bad Salzdetfurth.

Michel,
You can also refer to https://www.online.uni-marburg.de/ic...0-012-2823.pdf in relation to Bad Salzdetfurth and 42-51356.

Leendert

Re: identify B26 bomber crash

Leendert, sorry, how do you get JU out of the code? I see maybe UC or perhaps UG.

Re: identify B26 bomber crash

To me that first image shows a waist gunner opening from a B-24, and in the second image, the trapezoidal frame would be similar to a B-24H or J nose bullet- proof glass panel for the bomb site. I have an image of one that is in American Aero's small museum at New Smyrna Beach airfield, just cannot locate the image right now.

Re: identify B26 bomber crash

Hi Michel, Where the code is you can see the waist gunner window of a B-24.
