I./JG 2 - 9. September 1944

Gentlemen,

on 9 September 1944 I./JG 2 encountered a formation of P-47s north of Frankfurt am Main; in the ensuing aerial combat the Gruppe claimed five Thunderbolts shot down - all five confirmed - but lost ten Fw 190s in return with seven pilots killed and one wounded. The combat lasted for over 30 minutes and reached from the area around Gissen to Koblenz and west of Wiesbaden.

Can anybody give me some details concerning the allied side - which units were involved, what claims were made, what losses incurred ?

Many thanks in advance and

KR

The 82nd and 84th Fighter Squadrons (78th Fighter Group) claimed eight FW 190's destroyed and four damaged in the Giessen-Frankfurt and Hersfeld-Koblenz areas between 1725 and 1800. Only one P-47, flown by Lt. Kenneth L. Moore of the 82nd Fighter Squadron was lost.

Re: I./JG 2 - 9. September 1944

I think it's possible that JG-2 was involved in both combats, one with the 356 FG, 360 FS and the other with the 78th Gr.
Both the 356th and the 78th losses were at the same approximate time,i.e., 1730-1800.
I'm not too sure about the locations.
The Abschuss Tony Wood listing have the following:
1 P-47 1735 hrs 2./JG-2 LT. Eickhoff
1 P-47 1740 hrs 2./JG-2 Uffz Gartz
1 P-47 1755 hrs Stab I/JG-2 Uzz Kleine
1 P-47 1800 hrs Stab I/JG-2 Uffz Link
1 P-47 1805 Hrs 2./JG-2 Lt. Eisen
The next listings are almost an hour later by 3./JG11 and 4./JG-11 at 1850 and 1903 for two P-47s

Hello kaki3152,

As a little aside to your interesting post, I note that two of the names (Lt. Eickhoff and Lt. Eisen) listed in your post #6 show up later in the well-known Kladde (record book) for Großostheim which recorded flights of I./JG2 from 17 to 25 March 1945.

Respectfully,

Steve Sheflin

Gentlemen,

Perhaps the below link can be of some use to you as well (there was clearly some coverage of this combat in the local press in recent years):
