Re: Unknown plane in Greece

Hi, Byron...

This appears to be a bit of a conundrum. I think the code is likely to be 6G+LR, which would make this an aircraft of 7./St.G.51 prior to July 1940; thereafter, III./St.G.51 became II./St.G.1, retaining the '6G' parent code.

In this image, we can clearly see the letter 'R', the 7.Staffel indicator. However, if you're correct about the location being Greece, I am presuming the photo was taken sometime during the Balkans campaign of 1941, but this would conflict with the redesignation date of III./St.G.51 becoming II./St.G.1. Without meaning to doubt you, are you sure the photo was taken in Greece?

The subtype would appear to be a Ju87R, given the fuel tanks evident in the photo.

Regards,

Paul

Re: Unknown plane in Greece

Hello Paul,
The photo was given to me as it had been taken in Greece but i don`t put my hand in fire. I think too it is coded with 6G+LR and could belong to II./StG. 1, month May 1941 in Argos. Unfortunately, i don`t have this accident in my lists. An other pic attached

regards
Byron

Re: Unknown plane in Greece

These basically fit to the VKZ 6G+LR:
1941-05-23, II/St.G 1, Ju 87 R-2, 6072, Argos, Bruchlandung. Bruch 50 %.
1941-05-24, II/St.G 1, Ju 87 R-1, 5545, Galntus, Notlandung infolge Motorschaden. Bruch 100 %.
1941-05-24, II/St.G 1, Ju 87 R-2, 6083, Insel Dakos, Notlandung infolge Brennstoffmangel. Bruch 100 %.

I have no other Ju 87 -losses of II/St.G 1 in Greece in 1941.

Re: Unknown plane in Greece

Thanks for correction. I have also this loss at Maleme, but didn't consider it, because it was not in the Greek mainland.

Re: Unknown plane in Greece

Hi,

Further to my earlier posting - post #2 above, I can only imagine that the redesignated II./St.G.1 retained its III./St.G.51 codes for longer than I thought; this would perhaps account for the anomolous letter 'R', a 7.Staffel (and therefore III.Gruppe) identifier long after the unit's redesignation.

Might someone be able to confirm this for me?

Thanks,

Paul

Re: Staffel-lettering of the II/StG 1

Yes, Paul, that IS the case. The II/StG 1 continued to use R, S and T for their 4., 5. and 6. Staffeln, even into late 1943 when they became II/SG 1. Example: Hptm. Heinz Roka's Ju 87D-5 WNr.130931, 6G+AT, lost 21.Oct. 1943
