Luftwaffe bomb types in English nomenclature
I own book in German about Luftwaffe armament. However I do not speak German so I'd like to confirm bomb types abbreviations to be able to understand tables at least. So I guess:
- SC - blast bomb - SD - fragmentation bomb - PC - anti-tank or anti-armor bomb (what difference?) - AB - cluster bomb with various submunitions - FLAM/BRAND - incendiary bombs with various flammable mixtures Am I right? |

Re: Luftwaffe bomb types in English nomenclature
I think these would be more commonly in use:
SC = high explosive PC = armor piercing The rest are correct. |

Re: Luftwaffe bomb types in English nomenclature
So PC means penetration bomb used to destroy bunkers, armored ships and so on? As I understand SC is British GP bomb equivalent however it is necessary to know their explosives to overall bomb weight ratio.

Re: Luftwaffe bomb types in English nomenclature
I've read recently that Germany began mass producing and stockpiling the nerve gas Tabun-B at Dyrhrenfurth in lower Silesia from late 1943 and had intentions up until mid 1944 to use aerial bombs with the gas.
I gather they had an exploding core similar to the FLAM c500. Does anybody know the name of this particular type of bomb please? |

Re: Luftwaffe bomb types in English nomenclature
I think I've also seen SC bombs referred to by the British as "MC" (medium capacity, i.e. not a thin-walled blast bomb or a thick-walled fragmentation bomb).

Re: Luftwaffe bomb types in English nomenclature
SC in German language is for "Scharfe Munition"

Re: Luftwaffe bomb types in English nomenclature
Thanks for the images Dan. Therefore a 500kg nerve gas bomb would be a KC500?
It is claimed from several sources that Churchill though he was never aware of the Tabun-B project was deeply disturbed on the basis of intelligence about German work on the Atom bomb in 1944. As V-1s started raining down over London in late July 1944 he conveyed to Hitler [possibly through Roumanian opposition factions in contact with Marshall Antonescu], that Britain would retaliate with Anthrax unless Germany abandoned it's development of nuclear weapons. USA sent a similar threat to use nuclear weapons on Germany unless Hilter sued for peace within 6 weeks. Sources: Borkin writes about a letter from Dr Paul Harteck after the war confirming this threat. It is also recorded that scientists at Farm Hall discussed this threat too, however other sources include David Irving's Virus House (extracted by Irving from the Goudsmitt Papers) and is cited in the book: Germany and the Second World War: Organization and Mobilisation of the German sphere of Power..., Volume 5, Part 1, by Bernhard Kroener, Rolf-Dieter Müller, Hans Umbreit, Oxford Uni Press 2003 |

Re: Luftwaffe bomb types in English nomenclature
Not quite correct.
"Scharfe Munition" significates "Live ammunition" thus it´s a general designation. Regards Roland |
