He 111 W.Nr. 2149

I am looking for info on a He 111 with what appears to be W.Nr 2149. I don't need to know the codes, I can see that. My biggest problem is trying to ID the type. Photos are from an angle that makes it impossible to tell if it is an H or a P. Can anyone clear up this W.Nr. mystery and tell me from the W.Nr. what kind of He 111 I am looking at?

Thanks

Hi Mark,

Can you post a picture covering any view of the bow?

Re: He 111 W.Nr. 2149

Hi,

It was a P-2, failed to return from Ostfront sortie on 11 July 1941 whilst with Gesch Stab / KG55 coded G1+JA.

Lt Karl Doppelhammer (pilot), Fw Fritz Breuig (observer), Fw Herbert Schultze (W/T operator), Gef Max Wied (engineer) and Gef Anton Munster (gunner) all missing.

Regards,

David

David:

Thanks very much for the info. Can I ask the source of the information? BTW my photos are of the rear of the aircraft and the engines or cockpit area can't be seen.

Re: He 111 W.Nr. 2149

Mark / David,
this a/c had been on strength with 3/KG55 previously, in early 1940.
Would have been coded G1+?L
If anybody can add to this aircrafts earlier service, id be pleased to hear from them.

Best regs,
Steve.

Re: He 111 W.Nr. 2149

Hi:

I just took another look at the photo. Indeed, the aircraft appears to be coded G1+JL. I still assume it to be a P-2 given the W.Nr.

So, now we seem to have some conficting information here on this aircraft.

Re: He 111 W.Nr. 2149

Hi Mark,

Is the aircraft photo showing the aircraft crashed? If it is then the information is conflicting and it could be that the aircraft, although used as part of Gesch Stab flight, may not have had it's codes changed - as frequently seems to have happened. If not crashed it could be an earlier photo before it joined the Stab flight.

My notes show refs to loss list and unit day book - unfortunately I don't have access to these at present so maybe someone else could confirm either way?

Regards,

David
