III/JG54 Emblems and history.

All,

Been looking at my books and googling to try and get some background on these two emblems.

Relates to III/JG54.
The red shield, black cross and three white/silver aircraft - from JG211?
Mention of a crusader cross? Whats the background to this one?

8./JG54
Red bird with white wings. Previous history?

Anyone add anything more? Specifically if the bird is of a certain species?

regards,

Mark

Re: III/JG54 Emblems and history.

For 8./JG 54: "A red 'sparrow', originally the emblem of 2./JG 21. 1939-42. Bf 109E, F & G." (Note, I have also seen this emblem referred to as the "comical bird.")

"III./JG 54: A variant of the 'Jesau cross', with the black cross on a red shield, as the unit formed in Jesau (as I./JG 21) in summer 1939."

Aside from the Note, the above is from Luftwaffe Emblems 1939-1945 by Barry Ketley, and published by Flight Recorder Publications.
